First national INSPIRATION workshops are on the way

30/10/2015

In all 16 INSPIRATION partner countries, National Focal Points (NFPs) conduct workshops with national key stakeholders in order to elaborate the strategic research agenda on soil, land-use and land management in Europe in a bottom-up approach.

After a first workshop in the United Kingdom at the University of Nottingham in July, in the last week the German and the French national workshops took place.

The German workshop was organized by the INSPIRATION coordinator UBA and the German NFP Stadt+ represented by Uwe Ferber. More than 30 experts from public and private funding institutions, research organizations, industry, NGO and regulation participated in the workshop which took place at the Helmholtz Society in Berlin. The workshop focused in facilitated parallel sessions on the discussion of research topics. In particular topics related to a circular land-use economy approach; dealing with demographic change and migration in rural areas; impacts of climate change on urban land use; and questions of assessing soil quality were raised. In addition, aspects of communication between science and research users from industry and policy were addressed as well as means of ensuring transparency and broad involvement of stakeholders in all subject areas. The French workshop was conducted by the BRGM in Paris and gathered more than 20 experts. They discussed in a World CaféTM format topics for the strategic research agenda from a French perspective. Moreover, they revisited funding instruments available or desired to support such research and the implementation challenges for an efficient science policy communication. The results of the French, German and UK workshops will be worked up in the coming weeks and compared with the results of the workshops in the other countries where the national workshops will be conducted this autumn, too. Interim results are to be published until March 2016.
